Living Reel Time: The Concept
As the name suggests, Living Reel Time does have some significant ties to fishing however there is much more to living reel time than just the fishing. It starts with planning and researching new destinations. Figuring out where to go next is one of the most exciting parts. As we travel and camp, we meet people who have helped shape our plans, sometimes the weather makes us do something different but in the end it’s about the excitement and challenges that come along with it. We’ve traveled to numerous places and enjoyed most every moment. It’s basically about the overall experience and what you make of it.
In our travels, whether in the U.S. or abroad, we have always enjoyed learning about new areas and cultures. Not only do we want to appreciate the incredible geography and bodies of water, we also want to better understand the ecology of the area. Whether it’s pollution affecting habitat or restoring native fish populations in river systems we try and find a small way we can help by volunteering or donating to help support their efforts.
Us:
I grew up on the beaches of Southern California surfing and fishing. I spent summers at my grandfather’s ranch below the Sequoia National Forest fishing for trout. Meg grew up not too far from Lake Erie on the far east side of Cleveland, Ohio on the back of a pony trail riding. We took different paths but eventually met in Houston, Texas and later lived in Dallas for about ten years.
We traveled for work and we worked to travel.
Both our jobs required us to be on the road extensively. Typically, I was on a flight once a week. Since most of our workdays included airports and video calls, we decided to change our home base to the Florida Keys knowing we could get to Miami International Airport within 60 minutes on good day. So, we packed up and moved – bought a house and a boat. We fish, lobster, crab, snorkel, free dive, travel, camp and enjoy just being on or near the water.
After we both had 20+ years in the information technology field, I decided to retire. Meg continues to work and loves her job at Cisco. She spends most days on Webex (video calls) working with her global teams.
People always ask us how do you do that? And this website, blog and videos show exactly that – how we do it.
Trigger the Border Collie:
We were lucky enough to find him on a working cattle ranch in Wichita Falls, Texas. It’s the same story many dog owners have, ‘the dog picked me, not the other way around’… His dad was red and white, his mom the traditional black and white. There were seven pups. After viewing the pics of potential puppies on the internet (six of which were black and white) and before our arrival, I informed my wife and daughter we would be getting a black and white girl puppy. As my 11-year-old daughter and my wife were lining up the pups for some kind of puppy adoption test, he just walked up to me and said, ‘your decision has been made… it’s me’.
Trig has been on numerous travel/ fishing adventures with us and even traveled to Nova Scotia for some Atlantic Salmon fishing.
