{"id":888,"date":"2022-11-13T00:21:40","date_gmt":"2022-11-13T00:21:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/livingreeltime.com\/?p=888"},"modified":"2024-02-04T18:57:03","modified_gmt":"2024-02-04T23:57:03","slug":"cowlitz-river-wa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/livingreeltime.com\/?p=888","title":{"rendered":"Cowlitz River, WA"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-post-date\"><time datetime=\"2022-11-13T00:21:40-05:00\">November 13, 2022<\/time><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the Nehalem, we left Oregon and headed north to Washington.\u00a0 Meg had to catch a flight back home on Sunday out of SeaTac.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our first stop on the way north was Cape Disappointment:&nbsp; Enough said\u2026&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"995\" height=\"336\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/image.png?resize=995%2C336&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-889\" style=\"width:491px;height:166px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/image.png?w=995&amp;ssl=1 995w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/image.png?resize=300%2C101&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/image.png?resize=768%2C259&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 995px) 100vw, 995px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From there, on to the Cowlitz River for Salmon fishing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we arrived at the river, we thought we only had one camp spot on the river to stay.&nbsp; I won\u2019t name the campground, but for the money, the worst place we&#8217;ve stayed to date and the bathrooms were filthy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next morning, we started off fishing near the salmon hatchery.&nbsp; However, most of the salmon in that area were left over Chinook at the end of their spawn and at the end of their life.&nbsp; So, decided to go down river a few miles to the trout hatchery for better river access.&nbsp; Turns out, you can stay there up to 3 nights free.&nbsp; It\u2019s dry camping, but that\u2019s the reason we bought the rig we did.&nbsp; We have everything we need and are fully self-contained in the camper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, Meg needed to be on a flight the next day, so we fished a little and headed toward Seattle to drop her off at SeaTac.&nbsp; We stayed in Tacoma at a Sun Outdoors.&nbsp; They have multiple locations across the US.&nbsp; I am not recommending them for general camping. Obviously, I would rather be in a remote area on the river than a commercial campground.&nbsp; However, they are great to reset before dry camping\/ boondocking.&nbsp; They all have a laundromat, WiFi, hot showers, etc.&nbsp; They\u2019re a consistent spot to wash clothes, blankets, floor mats, clean the camper and prepare for another 2 weeks without amenities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On this trip, I have been on many questionable roads: 1,000\u2019 high dirt cliffs on one-way roads that are supposed to allow two-way traffic where you\u2019re hoping no one is coming the other way, etc.&nbsp; No issues.&nbsp; But, I\u2019ll admit, I was a little nervous dropping Meg off at SeaTac for the first time in the camper.&nbsp; Although I\u2019ve flown out of SeaTac numerous times, I\u2019ve never really thought about the layout, height restrictions and so on.&nbsp; Our rig is 11\u2019-7\u201d tall and almost as wide as a semi-truck.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After successfully dropping her off, I headed back to the Cowlitz.&nbsp; My first stop was at a small park and boat launch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"368\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/image-1.png?resize=1024%2C368&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-890\" style=\"width:838px;height:300px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/image-1.png?resize=1024%2C368&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/image-1.png?resize=300%2C108&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/image-1.png?resize=768%2C276&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/image-1.png?w=1079&amp;ssl=1 1079w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although I have caught many trout on this trip, this was my first full sized salmon:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"756\" height=\"417\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/image-2.png?resize=756%2C417&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-891\" style=\"width:376px;height:207px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/image-2.png?w=756&amp;ssl=1 756w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/image-2.png?resize=300%2C165&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 756px) 100vw, 756px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A bright Coho about 8lbs.&nbsp; It would have been the best eating size.&nbsp; However, the regulations stated all wild Coho must be released.&nbsp; I didn\u2019t mind letting the fish go.&nbsp; The run in this river was healthy.&nbsp; Also, there were a ton of hatchery fish available to keep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I then returned to the trout hatchery to enjoy my free camping with Salmon fishing included.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"804\" height=\"424\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/image-3.png?resize=804%2C424&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-892\" style=\"width:449px;height:237px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/image-3.png?w=804&amp;ssl=1 804w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/image-3.png?resize=300%2C158&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/image-3.png?resize=768%2C405&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 804px) 100vw, 804px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cowlitz Trout Hatchery<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We\u2019ve had great weather for almost two months on this adventure. &nbsp;The pro-side of the great weather in late October is it\u2019s warm and sunny.&nbsp; The con-side, the fish are not actively moving into the river systems or moving upstream due to lack of rainfall. On my return to the Cowlitz, typical Northwest weather finally showed up.&nbsp; It was wet, foggy, cold and rainy: exactly what the salmon needed.&nbsp; You can\u2019t have it both ways.&nbsp; Even with the rain and the cold, the mornings were incredibly peaceful while awaiting the potential opportunity to land another salmon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"744\" height=\"615\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/image-4.png?resize=744%2C615&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-893\" style=\"width:674px;height:557px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/image-4.png?w=744&amp;ssl=1 744w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/image-4.png?resize=300%2C248&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 744px) 100vw, 744px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While fishing for Coho, I caught a beautiful Cutthroat Trout.&nbsp; I will definitely return to this river.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"667\" height=\"275\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/image-5.png?resize=667%2C275&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-894\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/image-5.png?w=667&amp;ssl=1 667w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/image-5.png?resize=300%2C124&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 667px) 100vw, 667px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After a day of fishing in the rain, I was treated to this rainbow.&nbsp; If you notice, I only have the very top of the trees at the bottom of the picture.&nbsp; That\u2019s because just below that was the bobbed-wire fence with razor-wire on top to protect the hatchery trout from poachers and I thought it would take away from the Zen moment ;)\u2026&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"671\" height=\"384\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/image-6.png?resize=671%2C384&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-895\" style=\"width:656px;height:375px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/image-6.png?w=671&amp;ssl=1 671w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/image-6.png?resize=300%2C172&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 671px) 100vw, 671px\" \/><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After the Nehalem, we left Oregon and headed north to Washington.\u00a0 Meg had to catch a flight back home on Sunday out of SeaTac.
