{"id":1713,"date":"2023-11-25T15:37:00","date_gmt":"2023-11-25T20:37:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/livingreeltime.com\/?p=1713"},"modified":"2024-02-12T13:18:39","modified_gmt":"2024-02-12T18:18:39","slug":"chile-patagonia-how-to-free-horses-into-the-wild","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/livingreeltime.com\/?p=1713","title":{"rendered":"Chile Patagonia: How to Free Horses into the Wild"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-post-date\"><time datetime=\"2023-11-25T15:37:00-05:00\">November 25, 2023<\/time><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First of all\u2026 DON\u2019T!&nbsp; These horses were well cared for and well fed.&nbsp; It was an accident!&nbsp; And, although I\u2019m willing to shoulder most of the blame, I was an unwilling and unknowing pawn in a much larger scheme.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here is the mastermind behind the elaborate plan to free the horses:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"304\" height=\"405\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-14.png?resize=304%2C405&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1714\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-14.png?w=304&amp;ssl=1 304w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-14.png?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 304px) 100vw, 304px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This adorable mutt also had a Border Collie accomplice who refused to have her picture taken in fear her suspiciously cute face might be plastered on Chilean wanted posters throughout Patagonia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So how did this potentially tragic event begin?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After landing in Balmaceda from Punta Arenas, I headed toward the Simpson River.&nbsp; I researched the area a few years prior, and the Rio Simpson was my original choice.&nbsp; However, it was Spring in the southern hemisphere.&nbsp; Spring is unpredictable in all mountainous regions feeding the rivers in the valleys below.&nbsp; The Simpson, in my opinion, was too high and fast to fish: especially from the shoreline.&nbsp; My best bet was to find a tributary river or stream.&nbsp; After assessing the river on the drive, I pulled over to see if I had a better option.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Private Land v. Public Access:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Much of the river access in Chile is privately owned.&nbsp; I knew this before the start of my trip, so I wasn\u2019t surprised upon my arrival.&nbsp; I\u2019ve read, you can ask a landowner\u2019s permission to fish and possibly pay a nominal fee to access their property.&nbsp; There is one major flaw with that theory: finding the owner to ask permission.&nbsp; Your best option is to stay at a resort or hotel along the riverfront.&nbsp; As long as you enter the river from their property, and the river depth and flow will allow, you can wade the entire river without consequence or concern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After weighing my options, I chose the Cabanas Ecoturismo La Pancho Resort on the Rio Pangal: <a href=\"https:\/\/ecoturismolapancha.com\">https:\/\/ecoturismolapancha.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"601\" height=\"234\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-15.png?resize=601%2C234&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1715\" style=\"width:596px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-15.png?w=601&amp;ssl=1 601w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-15.png?resize=300%2C117&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 601px) 100vw, 601px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I didn\u2019t have a way to contact the resort from the road, so I took a chance they had a cabin available and headed that way.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Upon my arrival, I was extremely relieved they did indeed have accommodations. &nbsp;It was an incredible property with more river frontage than I had anticipated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"778\" height=\"515\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-16.png?resize=778%2C515&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1716\" style=\"width:594px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-16.png?w=778&amp;ssl=1 778w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-16.png?resize=300%2C199&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-16.png?resize=768%2C508&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 778px) 100vw, 778px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cabins were handcrafted and immaculate. They also came with a wonderful dog or two to keep you company if you wished.&nbsp; I missed my dog Trigger at home, so the company was more than welcome.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"382\" height=\"509\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-17.png?resize=382%2C509&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1717\" style=\"width:361px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-17.png?w=382&amp;ssl=1 382w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-17.png?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 382px) 100vw, 382px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next morning, I headed to the river at first light.&nbsp; There were two options to get there: either walk the entire length of the property from my cabin or open the gate to the road and drive.&nbsp; I chose the lazy option which I\u2019ll later regret. &nbsp;Leaving my cabin, I stopped, closed the gate, and drove to their main entrance.&nbsp; From there, it\u2019s probably about a half a mile to the river.&nbsp; &nbsp;The road leads to a large open area for activities including camping, kayaking, rafting and most importantly fishing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I waded into the crystal-clear water and with my second cast, hooked up on a large Brown Trout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"526\" height=\"249\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-18.png?resize=526%2C249&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1718\" style=\"width:469px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-18.png?w=526&amp;ssl=1 526w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-18.png?resize=300%2C142&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 526px) 100vw, 526px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Chile: Big Brown Rio Pangal w Release #fishing #trout #livingreeltime #shorts\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ivzuhIRlR7c?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I would have stayed and fished on this property for the remainder of the trip if possible.&nbsp; I had one challenge: the river level due to the Spring runoff.&nbsp; With high-water levels, I was limited to just a few good fishing holes. &nbsp;As far as I could look upstream or down, the fishing looked incredible; I just couldn\u2019t get there. &nbsp;They told me as summer approaches and the water levels subside, you can easily wade the majority of the river system.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After a successful first morning of fishing, I returned to the cabin for lunch. &nbsp;I knew I needed to expand my wading options.&nbsp; I thought I would ask if they knew of other access points or a neighbor\u2019s property where I could enter the river.&nbsp; I used Google Translate and walked a few hundred yards with my newly found canine companion to the main house.&nbsp; I arrived with a screenshot of the question translated on my phone in case I lost internet access.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There were several horses calmly standing next to the patio.&nbsp; And for some reason unknown to me, the dogs who were calm upon my arrival, took issue with the horses.&nbsp; And then, the horses took issue with the dogs.&nbsp; All of a sudden, there was more commotion than my question was worth. &nbsp;I decided heading back to my cabin was the best option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that\u2019s when the jailbreak plan was set into motion\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I loaded up the truck with my gear prepared for the evening bite and opened the gate to leave.&nbsp; I realized I had forgotten something and went back into the cabin.&nbsp; Suddenly, I heard rumbling accompanied by a loud neigh.&nbsp; It took a second, but I quickly realized it sounded like a stampede out of a Western movie.&nbsp; A small stampede mind you, but I\u2019m pretty sure it still counts.&nbsp; I rushed out of the cabin immediately realizing my error in judgement. &nbsp;They ran by at full speed with the dogs following close on their tail. &nbsp;I was genuinely panicked knowing I was responsible for this catastrophe.&nbsp; I managed to shut the gate, but at least seven were on the loose.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Looking north, toward the main entrance to the property, I could see the lady who owns the resort running out to try and stop the escape. &nbsp;But it was too late as they galloped toward the mountains.&nbsp; I ran to the entrance where she stood watching the horses run away.&nbsp; I asked if there was anything I could do while apologizing profusely.&nbsp; She was very calm and knew I was truly sincere.&nbsp; However, that didn\u2019t change the situation or ease my guilt.&nbsp; She simply stated, \u2018I\u2019ll get the truck and round them back up\u2019.&nbsp; I have to give her all the credit in the world.&nbsp; Obviously, this isn\u2019t the way she wanted to spend her evening.&nbsp; I was an idiot for letting this happen and she didn\u2019t imply or say that aloud in the least.&nbsp; Now that\u2019s professionalism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The dog and I anxiously awaited inside the gate in front of my cabin, hoping for the horses\u2019 safe return.&nbsp; Thankfully, I suddenly heard the distant honking of a horn and horses trotting back up the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Returning Horses Rio Pangal\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vLvv_PoTXaQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; I could hear the exact same eerily loud neigh in front of the cabin as I heard during the escape. As I opened the door, the horse stared at me as if to say, \u2018open the gate gringo\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"412\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-19.png?resize=620%2C412&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1719\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-19.png?w=620&amp;ssl=1 620w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-19.png?resize=300%2C199&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fool me once I said\u2026 I finally put the pieces together realizing it was a staged coup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And no, I\u2019m not seriously suggesting two dogs and a horse masterminded this elaborate escape.&nbsp; I\u2019m merely suggesting that apparently, I was outsmarted by a couple of dogs and a horse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In retrospect, had I just walked to the river, this whole fiasco and my feeble attempt at satire could have been avoided.&nbsp; And that\u2019s what I get for being lazy\u2026<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A guest inadvertently causes a commotion leading to horses escaping at a Chilean resort after dogs agitate them.
