{"id":1458,"date":"2023-06-30T18:23:00","date_gmt":"2023-06-30T18:23:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/livingreeltime.com\/?p=1458"},"modified":"2024-02-23T13:41:00","modified_gmt":"2024-02-23T18:41:00","slug":"montana-fishing-off-the-freeway","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/livingreeltime.com\/?p=1458","title":{"rendered":"Montana: Fishing Off the Freeway\u2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-post-date\"><time datetime=\"2023-06-30T18:23:00-04:00\">June 30, 2023<\/time><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As we left the town of St. Regis and headed up the mountain, we stopped at an exit that said \u2018Fishing Access\u2019.\u00a0 It also had a temporary sign that stated, \u2018Mandatory Watercraft Inspection\u2019.\u00a0 Basically, any boat, Jet Ski, etc. needs to be inspected for hydrilla, zebra mussels or anything else that could negatively impact their bodies of water or environmental balance. \u00a0This is also one of the areas that crosses the Continental Divide, so it\u2019s even more critical. In my opinion, a great idea and not much of an inconvenience for the person trailering the vehicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The area listed as the fishing access point was down the same road as the inspection station.&nbsp; We were the only people there with the exception of the two rangers.&nbsp; The ranger was extremely nice and obviously a little bored due to the lack of traffic.&nbsp; He said, \u2018sir, I\u2019m not sure if you\u2019re aware, but you lost your boat\u2019.&nbsp; We both laughed and then briefly chatted.&nbsp; I asked about a place to fish and camp for the night and if we were allowed to camp at the fishing access point 200 yards to his west.&nbsp; He said, \u2018sir, it is illegal to camp there\u2019, with a semi-serious tone.&nbsp; He then said, \u2018however, if you go between the two signs before the freeway entrance, there\u2019s a dirt road that will take you to the river and that\u2019s perfectly legal\u2019.&nbsp; The road, more like two tracks with grass on either side, would have been impossible to see due to the slope if you didn\u2019t know it was there.&nbsp; The spot where we couldn\u2019t camp was 200 yards behind him and the entrance to the dirt road 200 yards in front of him.&nbsp; He didn\u2019t have to volunteer that information, but we\u2019re glad he was kind enough to do so.&nbsp; The access to the river was only another 100 yards past that, so we could literally still see the inspection station.&nbsp; Although 50 yards off the freeway technically, we were 75 yards down below the slope of the highway and with the wind coming from the south, we couldn\u2019t even hear the road noise.&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next morning, we drove up the dirt road, waved to our new ranger friends and went the additional 200 yards to the fishing access.&nbsp; Trigger was outside with me while I was putting on my waders. &nbsp;I heard a noise in the woods literally 10 yards away.&nbsp; It was a moose.&nbsp; Trigger is getting older and doesn\u2019t notice things as quickly as he used to and wasn\u2019t aware of the presence of a moose, but I was.&nbsp; Without hesitation, I picked up Trigger and in one motion, tossed him into the camper.&nbsp; He seemed a little shocked and offended, and I don\u2019t blame him. &nbsp;Apparently, dogs and moose are not a good mix. &nbsp;Truth be told, he doesn\u2019t even know he\u2019s a dog and thinks everyone including other animals are his friends willing to throw his toys.&nbsp; Meg saw the moose from the window and knew exactly why I tossed Trig back in the camper and I immediately followed.&nbsp; Maybe I overreacted, I but wasn\u2019t willing to take a chance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The moose came around to the front of the camper for a quick video and photo opp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"585\" height=\"398\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-16.png?resize=585%2C398&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1459\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-16.png?w=585&amp;ssl=1 585w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-16.png?resize=300%2C204&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 585px) 100vw, 585px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I know some people are thinking, that\u2019s not even a full-grown moose.&nbsp; There aren\u2019t even antlers?!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, it\u2019s an adolescent moose.&nbsp; I\u2019m no moose expert by any means, but I heard teenage moose can be more unpredictable and dangerous and the logic kind of makes sense.&nbsp; I can\u2019t speak for everyone, but I\u2019ve certainly become more tolerant and mellow as I get older\u2026 sometimes\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even though the sign said, \u2018fish access\u2019, ironically there wasn\u2019t much fishable access to the river.&nbsp; I caught one trout and we decided to head down the mountain two exits to the east.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019ve mentioned secret spots before, and I\u2019m gonna\u2019 give this one up.&nbsp; And it\u2019s a good one.&nbsp; You might be thinking, it\u2019s right off the freeway so \u2018thanks for the obvious spot\u2019, but it\u2019s much more than that\u2026&nbsp; The reason I\u2019m giving it up is to make a point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I broke up this river access into three sections: \u2018<strong>First Run\u2019<\/strong>, \u2018<strong>Main Pool\u2019<\/strong> and \u2018<strong>Meg\u2019s Run\u2019<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"592\" height=\"292\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-17.png?resize=592%2C292&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1460\" style=\"width:650px;height:321px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-17.png?w=592&amp;ssl=1 592w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-17.png?resize=300%2C148&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 592px) 100vw, 592px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We camped there free for two nights. &nbsp;We watched people drive up, hop out of their trucks and hurry down the hill to access First Run. We\u2019d watch them work the stretch from the freeway down to the end of the run, walk back up the hill and move on. Occasionally, we\u2019d see some more adventurous fishermen work the First Run then move down to the large, deep Main Pool. It&#8217;s not like First Run and Main Pool should be ignored.&nbsp; They both hold a tremendous amount of fish and I was successful in both areas.&nbsp; However, both runs are hit by every fisherman on a daily basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>First Run:<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp; It\u2019s absolutely picturesque and exactly what you would hope for; ignoring the fact the picture was taken from the exit ramp of a freeway.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"689\" height=\"629\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-18.png?resize=689%2C629&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1461\" style=\"width:657px;height:600px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-18.png?w=689&amp;ssl=1 689w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-18.png?resize=300%2C274&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 689px) 100vw, 689px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Main Pool:<\/em><\/strong> &nbsp;This pool is classic and, although beautiful, extremely obvious. &nbsp;You either need to get your fly deep towards bottom of the pool, or wait for the insects on the surface later in the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"656\" height=\"571\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-19.png?resize=656%2C571&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1462\" style=\"width:507px;height:441px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-19.png?w=656&amp;ssl=1 656w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-19.png?resize=300%2C261&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 656px) 100vw, 656px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Main Pool Trout:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"509\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-20.png?resize=509%2C375&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1463\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-20.png?w=509&amp;ssl=1 509w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-20.png?resize=300%2C221&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 509px) 100vw, 509px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Meg\u2019s Run:<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp; It\u2019s appropriately named because as I was fishing Main Pool on day one, she and Trigger noticed a path on the other side of the river leading there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"617\" height=\"497\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-21.png?resize=617%2C497&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1464\" style=\"width:510px;height:411px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-21.png?w=617&amp;ssl=1 617w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-21.png?resize=300%2C242&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 617px) 100vw, 617px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The best thing about this run\u2026 of all the fishmen trying their luck at the first two obvious spots, no one was apparently willing to walk the additional quarter mile to this run.&nbsp; Within the first ten casts, I caught five fish all well above average.&nbsp;  I caught an 18\u201d Cutthroat and to this point, the largest of the trip.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dry fly fishing:&nbsp;
