{"id":1418,"date":"2023-06-10T01:36:00","date_gmt":"2023-06-10T01:36:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/livingreeltime.com\/?p=1418"},"modified":"2024-02-23T13:47:38","modified_gmt":"2024-02-23T18:47:38","slug":"idaho-coeur-d-alene-river","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/livingreeltime.com\/?p=1418","title":{"rendered":"Idaho: Coeur d\u2019 Alene River"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-post-date\"><time datetime=\"2023-06-10T01:36:00-04:00\">June 10, 2023<\/time><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Okay Montana rain, you win\u2026\u00a0 Moving to the other side of the mountain range into Idaho.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although Meg had to fly back for work, we talk every night about camp spots, fishing, weather or lack of, and the next airport I\u2019m picking her up at upon her return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we first started dating 16 years ago, I went on a solo fishing mission to Alaska.&nbsp; The weather was terrible on this trip in September.&nbsp; We talked every night and she remotely helped me avoid weather as much as possible and guided me on my quest for fish.&nbsp; I went everywhere from Anchorage, Homer Spit, Seward, Mt. Denali and back.&nbsp; That\u2019s when I knew she was the one.&nbsp; I would basically make the call to her for direction and help.&nbsp; Much like when Neo calls Trinity; but she\u2019s much more Trinity than I am Neo.&nbsp; You get the point\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Knowing my plight in Montana, she directed me towards Idaho to avoid the weather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"329\" height=\"504\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image.png?resize=329%2C504&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1419\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image.png?w=329&amp;ssl=1 329w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image.png?resize=196%2C300&amp;ssl=1 196w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 329px) 100vw, 329px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here\u2019s a screenshot of the weather on the way to Idaho.&nbsp; She said, \u2018I swear the bad weather is following you\u2019.&nbsp; There\u2019s that Karma thing again\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After descending the mountain, I chose to stay at the CDA Riverfront RV park: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdariverrv.com\/\">https:\/\/www.cdariverrv.com<\/a>\/<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"484\" height=\"355\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-1.png?resize=484%2C355&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1420\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-1.png?w=484&amp;ssl=1 484w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-1.png?resize=300%2C220&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 484px) 100vw, 484px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even with the close proximity to the freeway, it was peaceful due to the flowing sound of the river.&nbsp; The next morning I started off fishing as this had been the most clear and promising river I had seen in a month.&nbsp; I immediately hooked up on a large Cutthroat trout and it broke my line within a minute.&nbsp; I later learned that 3.2lb tippet was apparently too light to handle the fish and the current and I didn\u2019t make that mistake again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Later that evening after fishing the river and catching a few quality fish, I met the camp owner Lawrence.&nbsp; He fishes almost every day\u2026 yes, almost every day.&nbsp; He also has a YouTube channel:&nbsp; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@Flytechy\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@Flytechy<\/a>. Without hesitation, he pointed out the river sections on the property that were the most productive and offered advice on flies and presentation.&nbsp; Based upon his recommendation, I caught five more trout, almost in a row to conclude the evening\u2019s fishing efforts.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"648\" height=\"321\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-2.png?resize=648%2C321&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1421\" style=\"width:522px;height:259px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-2.png?w=648&amp;ssl=1 648w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-2.png?resize=300%2C149&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 648px) 100vw, 648px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He invited me to join him and his friend Sean to fish the North Fork of the Coeur d\u2019 Alene river.&nbsp; Just as the campground is referred to as CDA, so is everything else associated with the river, lake or towns in the area.&nbsp; I\u2019m making the obvious assumption it\u2019s because Coeur d\u2019 Alene is a PiTA to spell\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Back to the fishing\u2026&nbsp; He mentioned the amount of miles we would be walking the next day, and it seemed a relatively modest hike.&nbsp; He also mentioned, there\u2019s \u2018a little bushwhacking\u2019 to get to the river.&nbsp; Over time, I\u2019ve come to appreciate the differences in subjectivity with general statements and words:&nbsp; e.g., \u2018a little\u2019 and \u2018bushwhacking\u2019.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The way down to the river started off with your typical 45 degree descent of a rock and dirt cliff.&nbsp; So far, so good.&nbsp; Then, cross the river into overhead grass and bushes.&nbsp; Sean was leading the way and has fished this section of the river for 20 years.&nbsp; Yet, even he had land marks to navigate the first 1\/8<sup>th<\/sup> of the mile on our entrance to the river.&nbsp; I asked Lawrence the night before if he was concerned about Grizzly bears while fishing.&nbsp; He said the Grizzlies rarely come down to this elevation, and the biggest concern was confronting a moose.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"623\" height=\"396\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-3.png?resize=623%2C396&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1422\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-3.png?w=623&amp;ssl=1 623w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-3.png?resize=300%2C191&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 623px) 100vw, 623px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s Lawrence in the upper left following Sean on this \u2018clearly\u2019 defined path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once through the awkward maze in, the river was easily manageable with clear casting distance to most of the river.&nbsp; They offered me the first shot at the initial pool that was basically a layup; except for the cast.&nbsp; The last thing you want to do when invited into a spot is mess up a quality fishing hole.&nbsp; It was a five-foot drop over long grass with a large tree directly behind me.&nbsp; I respectfully passed.&nbsp; Lawrence threw a couple of casts and three fish approached, but no takers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019ve always said, it\u2019s important to keep learning and here\u2019s what I learned\u2026&nbsp; I\u2019ve always considered myself a hardcore fisherman no matter the circumstances and could keep up with anyone.&nbsp; Maybe it\u2019s my age.&nbsp; That would normally make sense to me.&nbsp; Lawrence is probably 10 years younger than me, but Sean is 10 years older, so excuses are out the window.&nbsp; There was no doubt they both were at least one rung up on the hardcore fishing ladder.&nbsp; Regardless of the terrain and difficulty on entering the area, they both carried two fly rods: a 5wt. and a 7wt.&nbsp; There are numerous trout in this system over 20\u201d, but that\u2019s not the reason why they were carrying the 7wt.&nbsp; The 5wt. was there so they could target the average trout.&nbsp; The 7wt. was to allow them to present flies larger than I would ever think to throw in this water.&nbsp; After seeing their choice of flies to entice the large fish, I regretted not bringing some saltwater flies with me on this trip.&nbsp; The other thing I learned\u2026 I normally wait until fish are rising before casting dry flies; not these guys.&nbsp; They would cast large dry flies without hesitation and were enticing strikes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019ve said in prior posts, \u2018secret spots are rarely that\u2019\u2026&nbsp; With that said, I\u2019m not giving up this spot.&nbsp; They didn\u2019t make me swear to secrecy or sign a NDA, but there are rules.&nbsp; Also, even if I told you, 90% of fishermen probably wouldn\u2019t go there because of the initial access to the river.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before we arrived at the river, we stopped at a fly shop that is more 90% gas station than it is fly shop.&nbsp; But I will say this, they had a quality selection and absolutely applicable flies to the local fishing areas.&nbsp; Lawrence and Sean both agreed on the hatch and we stocked up on these:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"547\" height=\"409\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-4.png?resize=547%2C409&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1423\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-4.png?w=547&amp;ssl=1 547w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-4.png?resize=300%2C224&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 547px) 100vw, 547px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that\u2019s the reason anglers carry more than one fly\u2026&nbsp; Did I catch an incredibly beautiful trout?&nbsp; Or\u2026 did I just really need to use the bathroom?&nbsp; I\u2019ll be more careful moving forward\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you look at this tributary, you can see it\u2019s not very large.&nbsp; Yet big trout live here. &nbsp;With each of us using different patterns, we started targeting fish to see if we could determine what was on the menu, or not, for the day.&nbsp; As we waded up the river, we would all take subtle shots at each pool.&nbsp; Sean and I were upriver and watched an extremely large trout hit the surface.&nbsp; We both had our casts, but to no avail.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Knowing the fish was there, Lawrence moved upstream and started throwing the biggest, most obnoxious fly he could find to antagonize the trout into a strike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"975\" height=\"646\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-8.png?resize=975%2C646&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1427\" style=\"width:519px;height:344px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-8.png?w=975&amp;ssl=1 975w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-8.png?resize=300%2C199&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livingreeltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-8.png?resize=768%2C509&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 975px) 100vw, 975px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is not that exact Sculpin pattern he was using.&nbsp; But, based on his success, I bought a few when I returned to pick up Meg in Bozeman.&nbsp; More on that later\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sean and I were about 50 yards upstream when Lawrence hooked up and it was a big trout.&nbsp; We quickly started back to provide a net or video in our support of the release.&nbsp; After 40 seconds, the fish was lost.&nbsp; With that\u2026 in unison\u2026 we all uttered the same word that so many fishermen have used every time this happens.&nbsp; Lawrence said, \u2018without a doubt, that would have been my personal best Cutthroat\u2019.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sean asked, \u2018did you put him on the reel\u2019?&nbsp; \u2018That\u2019s why you lost him\u2019.&nbsp; The answer was yes, but Lawrence said, because the fish hit so hard, he didn\u2019t feel the need to really \u2018set\u2019 him and that\u2019s why the fish came off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a reasonable amount of time on the way back to the campsite, Sean insisted you play a large fish on the line, not the reel: Lawrence politely disagreed.&nbsp;&nbsp;
